Music & Light

A student-led nonprofit · Durham & Chapel Hill

Bringing music.
Creating connection.

Live music for retirement communities, and musical opportunities for the next generation.

An afternoon. A common room. One song at a time.

The mission

Music has the power
to make people feel remembered.

Music & Light brings live music to retirement communities across the Durham–Chapel Hill area, and creates musical opportunities for the next generation.

Two missions, one belief: that music belongs to everyone in the room.

Reducing loneliness. Building connection. Carrying the music.

Stories

The rooms we've been
invited into.

Resident, Solista Durham

“Sometimes I think the world has forgotten we are here.”

An older gentleman came out to find us as we were loading the car. Tears in his eyes, wanting only to say thank you. What he said next is the reason we keep showing up.

We write down what we see and hear in the rooms we're invited into, the way you'd want someone to remember an afternoon that mattered.

Join the ensemble

You don't have to be
a virtuoso. You have to be present.

If you can sit beside someone, play one song, and let it matter, there's a chair waiting for you.

Musician

Strings, piano, voice, woodwinds. Any instrument that travels well into a small room.

Storyteller

Photographers, writers, filmmakers. Help us bear witness to what happens in the room.

Organizer

Logistics, scheduling, partner outreach. The quiet work that makes Tuesday possible.

Ambassador

Bring Music & Light to your school, hospital, or community. Open a new door.

A closing note

The song remembers,
even when we forget.

Be part of the remembering.
